The Wrap Institute July Newsletter

Upcoming video for TWI

Upcoming video for TWI

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone – We hope that everyone had a good July. For TWI, July has been a month preparing for some big shoots for August through November.

As a consequence of focusing on the bigger picture, only 5 videos were added this month:

– Microwave

– Refrigerator

– Coffee Maker

– Wall Accent Piece

– Kitchen Makeover (overview of cost/prep)

Starting in mid-August, new tool videos will be added: basic tool set, masking tape, adhesive promoters, double sided tape, rivet tools. For installation videos we are planning on a boat, Xbox/Nintendo, windows, plane, fleet of Ford Transits, golf cart, layout tips for full print, how to price wraps and much more.

Very exciting news: on Aug. 23 we will be wrapping Frank Fellers’ 2013 Ford Raptor in gold chrome at TWI headquarters in Dallas. The new wrap will be with Avery Dennison gold chrome that has been laminated with 1460 DOL. Many videos are planned to come out of this shoot so keep an eye out for them as Frank is a great resource for information and good selling points for wraps. Plus, his Raptor has some interesting additions like a complicated spoiler which the IR heater will come in handy with.

Thanks as always for being part of the wrap community and keep on getting better.

– Justin

In November, the Avery SWF workshop in Dallas at Car Wrap City has 11 spots left but 4 just got filled today so I’m thinking this will sell out quickly as well (Nov. 8 – after SEMA)

Design for Reel to Real

Design for Reel to Real

I will be doing demos for NBM at their Indy show from June 12-14.  They have created a very cool concept for me to work off of called “Reel to Real”.  Five times a day they will show an instructional video from The Wrap Institute which I will then demonstrate live on a Ford Taurus.  Over the coarse of the show I will completely finish the wrap so people attending can see the process from start to finish.  Stephen Sinek from Seven Sin Design came up with the artwork with the 5 demos sponsored by Mutoh, Oracal, Mimaki, General Formulations and Earl Mich Company.  If you are at the show come on by to check out the vids and installs.

Congrats to Robert Davidson for winning the first Irish carwrap competition held at Sign and Digital in Dublin.  The event was spectacular with everything in the space wrapped, a great dj and lots of spectators and competitors.  I was honored to be a judge along with Ole Sunshine and Maurice Boyer.  All the contestants really put their all into it and the winner definitely earned it.  Robert goes on to represent Ireland at the FESPA championships later this year so best of luck.

January Overview – The Wrap Institute

Hello everyone, this is Justin from The Wrap Institute.  I hope everyone had a great start to 2014 and that the videos have helped you take it to the next level.  This was a very exciting month as it marked the official announcement of the site, which was received well beyond our expectations.  Also, the site is starting to come together in terms of flow and content which is exciting.  I will be in Texas in the next few days so I can sit down with the tech team in order to really take the site to the next level so look for big changes in February.

In January the following videos were added: large vinyl cutouts, laptop wraps, deep recessed area overview, two full print recessed tips, clean cut full print recessed areas, reflective film overview, interior film overview, standard spoiler, laminating an IKEA table, used blade container, soft squeegee, chunky hinges, problem solving: lifting, problem solving: splitting and compound curve – van back.

In February, I am shooting three full days with the installers from Car Wrap City in Dallas.  I can’t say what we are shooting but it’s going to be spectacular and will be up on the site mid-February so look out for that.

As always, feel free to submit a video on cool tool or technique to help build the library, get recognition for yourself and win prizes.  For more info on this click on the Submit page.

We at The Wrap Institute are always open to feedback,  positive or negative, so always feel free to reach out as our goals is to provide the best platform for you to learn and make more money.

Thanks again for becoming a member and best of luck.

Far Out – Van Design for Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap

Here is Stephen Sinek’s design for the van wrap that will be used in the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshops.  I love this new design for 2014.  I will be showing a variety of different approaches on how to wrap it: vertical and horizontal panels.  The film used for the van this year is Avery Dennison’s 1005 EZ/RS with 1460DOL.  I like using the very conformable 1460DOL on vans because it holds the tricky recessed areas really well and handles the back curve on the fenders.  For more information on where to sign up go to the home page and click on the Avery-Mutoh logo.

New Vids on The Wrap Institute

The total vids on The Wrap Institute is now 163 totalling almost 22 hours.  Added yesterday were chunky hinges and standard spoilers.  This week, compound curves, UGIS overview, cutting, relief cuts and window tinting will be added.  On February 1 and 3, some very exciting films will be made in Dallas and posted mid-February.  Can’t say what they will be but I think it will be spectacular footage.  For more info and to sign up go to:  www.wrapinstitute.com.

Today I saw my first ad in a magazine.  Super cool stuff.  The Wrap Institute will be fully operation on Jan. 1 which is great and I have been really digging the Croftgate Wrap Care this winter.  So easy to clean my wrap, especially the salt and dirt that builds up so quick.

SGIA 2014 Done

Day 2

Day 2

Yesterday was the last day of a very busy and successful SGIA 2013 doing demos in the Avery Dennison booth.  For the show, I wrapped a curvaceous convertible Jaguar in a wide variety of Avery SWF.  The front bumper stayed black carbon and the driver side has 1005 EZRS on for the duration of the show.  On Day 1 I wrapped the hood/passenger side with emerald matte green with carbon highlights.  Day 2 was gold pearlescent with blue chrome.  Day 3 was gunmetal matte metallic and carmine red gloss.  The Jaguar was a super fun car to wrap with beautiful body lines to play off of.  Thanks to Joel Ross from Avery for setting up such a cool booth (jumbo tron and camera showed my moves close up to the crowds during the demos) and to Paul “Mr. Smooth” Roba partnered with me as usual.  One very cool aspect for the show was that my wife and daughter were on hand with it being my daughter’s first time seeing paper do demos.  Super cool.   A big thanks to Avery for having me in the booth and I’m really looking forward to more demos for Avery at SEMA in about a week and a half.

Dual Filmage

carwrap IMG_6869 IMG_6866Today I wrapped an Audi A6 with Avery brushed metallic and matte metallic film.  I love wrapping cars in two styles of films as it really gives me options in terms of making the vehicle unique.  The client, an employee of Avery, wanted to showcase Avery films so I even added a third film on the mirrors and door handles – black carbon.  The dark purple matte film really accented the titanium brushed finish.  I used Knifeless Tape on the hood along the contour so the purple matched the contour on the front bumper and spread out to match the purple roof.  To clean and protect the finished wrap, I applied Croftgate Wrapcare JP Matte.  Super cool to finish a nice wrap like this before a long workshop trip starting tomorrow.

Mark Dean Veca – Year of the Snake

year_of_the_snake_5_EI was very happy to be part of Mark Dean Veca’s installation piece for the ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The artwork is a combination of paint and floor graphics along with a replica of the bar from “The Shining”.  I hooked up and installed the floor graphics (32ft. x 100 ft) in between a big workshop run.  A big thanks to Paul “Superman” Roba and Avery Dennison for supplyingthe floor graphics (MPI2921) and to Jon Sherman from Flavor Paper for printing it all up.  I had some essential help from volunteers from Sitelab and Mark was on site as well to lend a helping hand.  It came out just smashing or, rather, slithering.

I just finished up my last carwrap workshop run in Ireland this year for Sign and Digital.  Yesterday, I taught it up in Dublin and today Belfast.  Thanks as always to everyone who took the time and money to take the workshop.  We worked on a variety of vehicles and focused mainly on 3M IJ180 print film with 8580 overlam.  A special thanks to Leo Maher, owner of Sign and Digital, and his team for all the hard work to make this happen.  We are setting up the workshop schedule for 2014 which looks like it will include several advanced workshops which is super cool.

Avery SWF Restyler's Choice

Avery SWF Restyler’s Choice

Last week I taught two Avery SWF workshops at Restylers’ Choice in Cincinnati.  Both sold out workshops were filled with really eager students which made both days flow.  There was a wide variety of Avery SWF on hand for the participants to practice with – gloss, matte, white/black carbon, brushed metallic and gold/blue chrome.  Thanks as always to Knifeless Tape and Croftgate USA for sponsoring these workshops.  So nice to see everyone’s positive reaction to how well the Wrapcare JP works on the chrome.  A big thanks to Doug and everyone at Restylers’ Choice for being such cool hosts (and for taking us go cart racing).   Linda Ebbinghaus from Avery for her help before, during and after.  I love these Avery SWF workshops as they really allow me to let loose in terms of showing the really deeper aspects of wrapping.  Cool stuff.

Finishing up the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshop and certification workshop in Chicago today.  Monday and Tuesday were the hands-on workshop with 19 students and the certification is going on right now with Stephen Sinek teaching the design portion starting at noon.  Thanks as always to the participants for taking the time and money to come in.  Thanks to New Image for hosting the event and the home cooked lunches/bbq which was super tasty and always to Linda Ebbinghaus from Avery for all the coordination before and during the workshop.  Tomorrow and Friday are two Avery Supreme Wrapping Film workshops at Restyling in Cincinnati and then I’m going home.  This was the second longest trip of the year so I can’t wait to be home with my ladies.

The Atlanta Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap finished up just a few hours ago.  This sold out workshop was filled with super cool students who wrapped it up with Avery 1005 EZRS print film with 1360 DOL that was printed on a Mutoh Valuejet.  Every workshop is unique and this one was a standout.  An ant’s nest exploded into activity when the roof rack was removed from one of the rental cars and a student brought their hawk in for the day.  Interesting times in Atlanta.  Tomorrow I’m off to Grand Rapids to do a floor install for artist Mark Dean Veca then to Chicago for the next Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap starting Monday.

Wrap Like A King – Cut Off Sept. 15

For those of you who haven’t entered, the Avery Wrap Like a King contest will have its first round of judging on September 15 so be sure to get your entry in ASAP.  This first round will whittle the field down to 32 contestants and the final results will be revealed on October 15.  I think its a super cool contest with great prizes like cash, gift certificates from Avery and Croftgate USA as well as a chance to go to SEMA and see an episode filmed from West Coast Customs.  Needless to say I’m honored to be a judge of the Wrap Like a King contest and am really looking forward to seeing everybody’s work.

Brisbane

7

On August 23, I completed the last of a 3 city Avery Dennison carwrap workshop in Brisbane, Australia.  The event was hosted by Red Bull Motorsports which, needless to say, was a great facility with just an insane amount of trophies laying around.  The workshop, like the previous two, was sold out.  This workshop had more beginner to intermediate attendees so it became  more of a watch Justin wrap and practice at home event which was super cool.  Always adapt to what the guys want.  A special, special thanks to Peter Wright from Avery Dennison for putting this tour together, the well planned travel arrangements, dinners with the major players in the Australian carwrap/fleet market and the good times.  Super cool times.

Sydney

On August 21, I taught a 1-day carwrap workshop in Sydney, Australia for Avery Dennison.  This sold out workshop was filled with mostly experienced installers so we really got deep into the carwrapping process.  I found the guys taking the workshop to be very engaging and inquisitive which made me feel like we could have gone on for a couple more hours.  Great event.

Melbourne

IMG_1493

On August 19, I taught a 1-day carwrap workshop in Melbourne, Australia for Avery Dennison at Nissan Motorsports.  17 super hard working guys attended the carwrap workshop.  We practiced with a wide variety of films – gloss, matte metallic, carbon and chrome.  I was super impressed by the overall quality of Australian installers and how cool Melbourne is.  Thanks to everyone at Avery Dennison Australia for making this happen and to Nissan Motorsports for being a fine host.

Avery SWF LA #2 – Image One Impact

On Thursday this week in the Los Angles area I taught the second Avery Supreme Wrapping Film workshops at Image One Impact.  A majority of the students had taken the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap which was super cool to see everyone again.  During this long one-day workshop, we went deep into the carwrapping process and used a wide variety of film – gloss, matte, carbon, matte metallic and chrome.  Thanks to Frank and Dave at Image One Impact for hosting and helping out, Troy Downey from Ape Wraps and to Linda Ebbinghaus from Avery Dennison for being the grease that makes the wheel turn.

Brazil in the Bag

I finished up my Brazilian run yesterday – 5 days of a sign show and 1 workshop. The sign show was super, super busy with lots of crowds/demos/competitions. The installers in the competitions did a great job and the audiences for the demos were huge. Good times. Thanks to Marcelo Souss, owner of Alltak Tuning for bringing me in and everyone at Alltak for their help during the show and workshops. Super cool.

Getting Ready for Brazil

On Monday I fly out to Sao Paulo, Brazil to do demos and teach workshops for Alltak Tuning, a privately held car wrap film manufacturer. Tuesday through Saturday I will be doing demos in the Alltak Tuning booth along with being a judge of the Cambea #3 car wrap competition. The crowds last year were huge so I can only imagine they will be bigger this year as there are more sponsors and teams who have entered. The following week I teach 2 two-day workshops at the Alltak Tuning headquarters. An exciting and full two weeks. After this run I have two weeks vacation with my ladies then I’m off to San Antonio for a 3-day workshop for Ikon Graphics and an Avery SWF workshop at Image One Impact.

Electric Speed

I helped wrap part of this experimental race car for TU Delft. The graphics and wrap were donated by Omnimark which is a great graphics company in the Netherlands based in Weesp. I love the car as it was built by students and is electric. Even better, they usually get first place at worldwide competitions so kudos.

FESPA London Done

I just got back from London after a very successful week of doing demos in Avery’s booth at the FESPA show. Throughout the week, Paul Roba from Avery and myself did 4 demos a day on a Land Rover using a wide assortment of Avery Supreme Wrapping Films including chrome. I think the most popular films were the matte metallic greens which are really stunning on a car. They actually had a cameraman filming the demos with the images projected on a huge screen above the booth. Super smart as it allowed me to demo trickier aspects like handles and mirrors and everyone could see it in detail. Thanks to everyone from Avery Europe for all the help and the great booth.

Heading to London

I’m at Schipol airport in Amsterdam about to get on my short and sweet flight to London to do demos in the Avery-Dennison booth at the FESPA show this week. The word on the street is the booth is quite spectacular with a race simulator people can play on, a huge jumbo screen that will let more people see me wrap it up and the car will be a Land Rover Evoke. Paul Roba, my usual partner in crime for the U.S. sign shows, will be there this week to do the talking while I do the wrapping. Super exciting. Along with demonstrating Avery Supreme Wrapping Film and their new 19 colors, I will be teaching mini-workshops to anyone who signs up. If you feel like getting some advice or extra work on tricky sections feel free to sign up for some one on one.

Workshop Run Wrapped

On Thursday last week I finished the last of a series of workshops in Abbotsford, BC.  This last workshop was the new Avery Supreme Wrapping Film workshop which focuses solely on paintwrap films.  The students, many of them had taken the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap, worked their butts off from 8:30 to 17:00.  I love this workshop as it really let’s the intermediate and advanced installers dive into the tricky stuff with free practice film (including chrome).  Good stuff.  This last workshop run consisted of 8 workshops in 2 weeks in 7 cities and two countries.  Needless to say if I didn’t have the super help from Linda Ebbinghaus from Avery both in setting them up and making sure all the details are taking care of during they wouldn’t happen.  Thanks to everyone who took the sold out workshops as well as the host and I’m looking forward to the next round in August.

One more to Go

I’m nearing my final leg of this latest run of workshops in North America.  All the students for the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap and Avery SWF workshops have been super hard working and absorbing all the info and techniques like sponges.  This latest run has included 1 private in Conneticut, 2 workshops in New Jersey, 2 workshops in Toronto, 1 workshop in Texas and 2 workshops in Vancouver.  A long run for sure so it will be nice to be back home with my ladies.  Some group pics below:

Brazil! – Alltak Sign Show and Workshops

I am very happy and honored to be going back to Brazil to do demos and workshops for Alltak Tuning Films.  From July 10-13 I will be doing demos in the Alltak Tuning booth at the Serigrafia Sign Show.  On top of doing demos during the show for Alltak Tuning I will be one of the judges for the Cambea wrap contest.  This wrap contest was super exciting last year so I only expect it to be even better this year.  After the sign show I will be teaching two 2-day workshops at Alltak headquarters in Sao Paulo.  The space is limited for this workshop so be sure to sign up quickly.  Here’s the link: http://www.alltak.com.br/eventos.php.  Thanks as always to Marcelo Souss, owner of Alltak Tuning, for bringing me to Sao Paulo to wrap it up.

FESPA London

I am very happy to announce that I will be doing demos and mini-workshops in Avery Dennison’s booth at the FESPA show in London from July 25-29.  I will be wrapping up a Land Rover with several of the new 19 colors and finishes Avery Dennison will be launching at the show.  Super exciting.  I will be doing 4 wrapping demos a day.  Also, new to the standard demos at the show, I, along with another Avery Specialist Installer, will be giving mini-workshops to people at the show.  People can sign up and get 30 minutes of instruction on any part of the vehicle they are having trouble with.  I think its a great way for me to help out experienced installers or let someone new to wrapping get some hands on experience.  Great idea from the Avery marketing team.  I look forward to seeing ya’ll there.

Toronto Avery SWF Workshop Sold out

The  Avery Supreme Wrapping Film workshop on June 6 at Proveer in Toronto sold out today.  For the SWF workshop in Texas at Sign Warehouse on June 8 there are 2 spots left and there are 3 spots left for the one in Vancouver on June 13.  I would think based on sign up volumes that these workshops will sell out over the weekend so if you are interested I would sign up soon.

Also, it looks like two more Avery SWF will be added to the schedule this year – one more in New Jersey and LA.  The one in LA will most likely take place in August at Image One Impact.  New Jersey is to be determined.

I am very happy that this new hands-on workshop is selling out like the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap as I think its a great workshop for learning the art of paintwrapping.  Exciting times.

Sign and Digital Ireland – 2013

IMG_4512

I just completed my first round of 2013 workshops for Sign and Digital in Ireland. On Tuesday, I taught a hands-on workshop for 11 participants in Dublin. For this workshop, we used 3M IJ180cv3 and worked on a van with deep recessed areas and a sedan. On Wednesday, I wrapped up the service van for Sign and Digital with the help of Flannery Signs in Dublin. On Thursday, I wrapped a sedan for one of Sign and Digital’s salesmen with the help of the guys from Carstyle in Dublin.

I really love how the van and sedan turned out (design by Stephen Sinek from Seven Sins Design). Thanks as always to everyone at Sign and Digital for all their help, especially to owner Leo Maher who is always pushing the envelope which I admire highly.

Seven Sins

I am very happy to announce that Stephen Sinek of Seven Sins Design will be teaching the design portion of the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap for the remainder of 2013. Stephen is an award winning designer who really knows the ins and outs of the design making process. Stephen taught the last round of the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshops in Seattle and LA and got overwhelmingly positive feedback. Super cool to have him on board. First Avery SWF workshop a Big Success

The first Avery Supreme Wrapping Film workshop was finished last week and I shall be so bold to deem it a big success. The workshop sold out in about 4 hours when it was announced a month ago. 18 participants took the workshop that had 3 sedans and a copious amount of practice films which included gloss, matte metallic, matte, carbon and chrome. Since this was a class for intermediate and advanced installers we could dive straight into the finer aspects of wrapping. Everyone was very enthusiastic and worked hard throughout the long day (8:30 to 5:00). Working with the chrome was a big hit as its the hot film of the moment plus its practice material which eliminates the pressure of having to waste expensive film on the job. A big thanks to everyone at Image One Impact for hosting the event and all the help throughout the day. Thanks to Paul Roba and Linda Ebbinghaus at Avery Dennison for coordinating the event. The next Avery SWF will be held in New Jersey at the end of May. I Can’t Find My Car

IMG_4428
I just got done wrapping up my car with a new design. I got the idea from a recent Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap that I taught. One of the participants, Daren Whitten, brought in his Mercedes to wrap up with this print. I thought it looked so good I had to have it on my car. Thanks to Daren for setting up the file, Knibbe Lettering for always doing a great job on the print, Patrick Vermeulen from Dutch Dutch Design for help with the install/space and to Paul “Sign Show” Roba from Avery Dennison for the Beta test film. I now have to get my beard growing back ASAP so I can fit in with the car (and, more importantly, that my wife will kiss me again).

Avery/Mutoh School of Wrap – Seattle/LA

Last week marked the completion of the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshops for Seattle and Los Angeles.

Both sold out workshops were filled with really eager students which made teaching the course even more fun. All the students worked with Avery’s 1005 EZ/RS film that was printed on a Mutoh Valuejet.

A special thanks to Traffic Graphix in Seattle and Ordway Signs in LA for hosting the events.

The next round of Avery-Mutoh workshops in New Jersey and Toronto are sold out so if you are interested in taking this 2-day workshop try to sign up for the next round in September.

Here is a time lapse video of me helping wrap up Sign and Digital’s Creative Cruiser – http://youtu.be/ha5zSO9K6dM

This custom van brings Sign and Digital’s products right to the customer which is a brilliant concept.  In the back of the Creative Cruiser is a showroom with all the tools in the catalog along with a special compartment that stocks the wrapping films.  The Creative Cruiser will be covering all of Ireland and England starting this month.  The wrap was printed on 3M IJ180 CV3.  The first round of hands-on car wrap workshops that I will be teaching for Sign and Digital start next month – April 22-24.  If you’re interested be sure to go to their website to sign up:  www.signanddigital.com.

ISA 2013

I just got my schedule for the 2013 ISA show and its nice and full.  I will be doing three demos a day in the Avery booth with Paul “Sandman” Roba.  I will be demoing their 1005 EZ RS full print film and their Supreme Wrapping film.  I don’t think I can say what I will be wrapping but it will be good.  The times for the Avery booth are:  10-11, 1-2 and 3:30-4:30.  I will also be doing 2 demos a day in the Mutoh booth using Avery 1005 EZ RS and 1460 DOL.  I will be speedwrapping in their booth with the idea to wrap a smart car in two 1-hour sessions.  The times I will be in the Mutoh booth will be: 11:15 – 12:15 and 2:15 – 3:15.  Should be lots of fun so be sure to check them out!

First Avery SWF in the Bag

1

Last Saturday I completed the first Avery Supreme Wrapping Film workshop at Grimco in Pompano Beach.  This is a new workshop that Avery is offering in 2013 that focuses solely on their single color films.  The workshop sold out in a day which is a testament to how popular paint wrapping is becoming.  The 15 students plowed through gloss, matte, matte metallic, brushed metallic and chrome films over the course of the long day (8:30 to 17:00).  Everyone got a big tool kit and 25 yards of Avery SWF which makes the workshop a screaming deal on top of what they learn.  The next Avery SWF workshop will be held at Image One Impact in California on April 15.  For more information go to www.averygraphics.com or to ImageOneImpact.

Private Workshop – Carswraps – Sherman, TX

1

While I was in the U.S. for the latest round of the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshops I taught a private workshop for Scott Bechtel’s company, Carswraps in Sherman, TX.  This is the second private workshop I’ve given his solid crew so we upped the ante and worked on the chrome wrap he was preparing for the Dallas car show.  Though you are not supposed to, Carswraps printed on the Avery Conform Chrome then laminated it with 1360 DOL (I think 1460 DOL would be even better next time).  Its definitely not an easy install but the results are simply spectacular.  Props to Scott for going for the gold on this wrap and his crew for doing such a good job.

Dallas/NJ Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap Wrapped

dallas nj group
I am happy to say that the Dallas and New Jersey Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshops are complete.  Both sold out workshops were filled with great students which always makes it a pleasure to teach.  In the workshops we used both Avery 1005 EZRS with 1360 DOL and Supreme Wrapping Film.  In Dallas, Darren Whitten of Whitten Graphics brought his Mercedes in and wrapped it in camo.  Very spectacular.  My wife is so impressed I believe it will be going on our Opel Vectra in the near future.  Thanks to everyone at Sign Warehouse and Diversified Display for making these events run so smoothly and a special thanks to Linda Ebbinghaus at Avery for coordinating everything from start to finish.

Yesterday I finished the 7th Rabobank Touring car for their bike teams.  A long week as the wrap was a puzzle of different colors and films but it all worked out in the end.  Thanks to APlus for the work and help throughout the job and everyone at the Renova BMW dealership in Breda for keeping the ball rolling.  A special thanks to my daughter Tigerlily for helping out on the last car. She could have worked on the easy door but went right for the front bumper.  Good girl.   I couldn’t help but flash an Armstrong “7” for the completed vehicles.  The only drugs taken during this “race” was 3 cups of coffee a day.  Honest.  APlus made a time lapse video of one full wrap which should be up shortly.

I Promise, No Doping

1

I did the first of 8 BMW cars for Rabobank on Friday for APlus Reclame in the Netherlands.  Thank god for Knifeless Tape as this wrap consisted of separate colored films – 3M 1080 orange and white and 3M 100 series blue.  Also, a nice bonus as the vehicles will all be wrapped at the BMW dealership which means a mechanic will take all the hardware off beforehand and put it back on when finished.  True luxury.  Starting tomorrow I begin on the remaining 7 with the goal to be done by Friday.  A very cool job all around though a bit sad to know they won’t be seen on the Tour de France this year.  Rabobank stopped the sponsorship for the men’s racing team and is now only focusing on the women and development teams.  I actually had to pass a blood and urine test before my first squeegee stroke (joking).

KPN Green Luxury Cars

This weekend I helped an install company, Dutch-Dutch, wrap 8 luxury cars for a one day event in Amsterdam for the Netherlands cable/mobile phone company KPN.  The film used was matte green Hexis.  Needless to say a lot of Knifeless Tape was used to avoid cutting on the cars.  Very cool job to do over the weekend.  Tonight the graphics come off –  a pity as they look quite cool in green.

Nice Feedback from SC

James Gregorie, owner of Pleasant Details in Charleston, SC:

“Justin came to my shop for a two day advanced training workshop in January of 2013. It was an absolute game changer. Although we have been wrapping vehicles for about a year we felt our installers would benefit from some advanced technique tips and training from the best. We knew we were slow but had hit a ceiling, couldn’t seem to move any faster and everyone was getting frustrated. Well, it ended up being extremely valuable to me as well. From new tools and new techniques to figuring out that our printers were melting the adhesive, we have become sooooo much more efficient. Once we implemented everything Justin taught us, we instantly saw that the investment in him and his workshop paid for itself. It used to take 4 of my installers 2 full 9 hr days to complete a Sprinter full wrap. The day after Justin left we had a Sprinter come in for a full wrap.  It took 3 installers 7 hours to complete and the quality was much higher than before. I was in shock. I would recommend Justin’s private workshop to anyone in this industry that wants  higher quality work with much faster turn around times.”

So cool when clients pick up the training tips and tricks so quick.

Private for Pleasant Details

IMG_3475

I just got done teaching a 2-day private workshop for Pleasant Details in Daniel Island, SC.  Pleasant Details is well known for their paint protection work and are now transitioning into full color car wraps and paintwraps.  On Day 1 of the workshop we wrapped a Sprinter from start to finish that they had lined up for a client (pictured).  On Day 2 we covered a wide variety installation techniques on bumpers, mirrors, door handles and much more.  One thing to note, before the workshop that XL Sprinter took them 2 days to complete with 4 installers.  The day after I left it took 3 installers 7 hours to finish.  Quite a jump in such a small amount of time which is super cool.  Its really nice to see people absorb what they learned so quickly.  Thanks to everyone at Pleasant Details for bringing me in and the warm hospitality.   Also, a special thanks to Paul Roba from Avery Dennison for supplying the practice material and Kawasumi Yumiko from NT Cutter for supplying the knives.

Alltak Tuning Brazil for 2013

I am very happy to announce that I will be going back to Sao Paulo, Brazil to work with Alltak Tuning in 2013.  Like last year, I will provide demos for a sign show as well as help judge the wrap contest, Cambea #3.  After the sign show I will teach 2 car wrap workshops at the Alltak Tuning factory.  The window for the sign show and workshops is July 8-19.  If you are interested in signing up for the workshops go to: http://www.justinpate.net/wp-admin/post-new.php.

The sign show and wrap contest were particularly fun last year as the crowds were great and the contestants really put their heads down in order to get the big prize.  Below are some pics from last year – the wrap contest, me with Marcelo Souss (owner of Alltak Tuning), me with the winners of Cambea #2 and a group pic from one of the workshops.

No Bleeding, No Wrapping

In July of this year I taught two workshops and helped judge the Cambea #2 wrap contest in Sao Paulo for Alltak Tuning.  The workshops and sign show went super smooth and I just got one of the coolest compliments an instructor can get.

When talking about the tools needed for wrapping during one workshop, I showed a first aid kit and said, “Every installer has to have this in the tool bag.  If you’re not bleeding you’re not wrapping”.  Well, I just got these pics from Marcelo Souss, owner of Alltak Tuning

Dimas Brasil, one of the students in the workshop, got a tattoo on his arm that says, “No Bleeding  No Wrapping”.  Now that is a an honor.

Thank you, Private

I want to say thanks again for all the companies that had me come in to teach a private workshop.  I love private workshops as they give me a chance to really dial into a few installers and figure out exactly what they need to take it to the next level.  It also gives me a chance to eat some really good local food like BBQ in Nashville, Malaysian in Brunei, great steak in Texas and much more.  A special thanks to Paul Roba at Avery for supplying 50 yards of practice material for each workshop and to Yumi Kawasumi at NT Cutter for supplying the A-551P knives.  For more information on private workshops always feel free to shoot me an e-mail at justin@justinpate.net.  Here are some pics from several of the workshops – Texoma Wraps (Denison), 12-Point Signworks in Nashville and iDesign Concept in Brunei.

Proveer Private Workshops for 2012

Here are the group pics from the Proveer-Avery workshops that took place  in Canada during 2012.  These workshops were held in partnership with Avery-Dennison and look like they will happen again for 2013 as all the ones in 2012 sold out.  The locations for 2012 were:  Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa.  Thanks to everyone at Proveer and Avery for making the workshops such a success and a special thanks to Laurie Hung from Proveer.  She is leaving Proveer to start a career in real estate and I can’t say enough about how much help she was in making the workshops smooth as butta.  Best of luck!

Mini Cooper Chrome Video

This is a sample video of the chrome wrap that was completed while doing a private workshop in Brunei.  If you just look at the chrome it can get pretty interesting.  A complete video to follow shortly.

Chrome Wrap in Brunei

I just finished teaching a private workshop in Brunei for iDesign Concept owned by Abu Mohammad.  As the installers who work for iDesign have a high level of skills, the focus of the workshop was on fine tuning technique and creating better efficiency.

iDesign installs premium level paintwraps on exotic vehicles so they use a wide array of materials from carbon, gloss, matte and chrome.  Avery Dennison provided practice material, both Supreme Wrapping film and Conform Chrome.

With the Conform Chrome, we wrapped up a Mini-Cooper which was a fun challenge with spectacular results.

A special thanks to Paul Roba and Peter Wright from Avery Dennison for providing the practice material and, most of all, to Abu Mohammad for bringing me to Brunei and the generous hospitality.

Brunei, baby!

Tomorrow I’m heading to Brunei to teach a 2-day private workshop for IFoilDesign.  The focus of the workshop will be how to apply chrome and paintwrap film as well as to give an Avery certification test.  I’ve never been to Brunei so I’m very excited and curious to check it out.  Pics shall following in a day or two.

SEMA 2012 in the bag

Thanks to Paul “Hit Man” Roba and everyone else at Avery for a great SEMA show this year.  I was genuinely surprised by how many more cars were wrapped at the show this year compared to 2011 as well as the crowds for the demos which were non-stop.  I think the new brushed metallic line and the carbon which launches in December will be big hits.  Rightfully so as they are just amazing to work with.  My next sign show will be  ISA in Vegas and the 2013 Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshop schedule is being worked on as I type.  I am thinking it should be released in the next week or two.

SEMA 2012 – Final Day

Here are the pics from the final day of wrapping it up in the Avery booth at SEMA.  I wrapped the car with the new Avery titanium brushed metallic then some graphics were applied over top as requested by the owner.  SEMA was spectacular this year with people really starting to get the concept of paintwrapping.  Its on, baby!

SEMA 2012 Day 3

Here’s what I wrapped in the Avery booth today at SEMA – purple metallic matte with the black brushed metallic as well as a bit of black carbon (mirror/door handle).  Tomorrow I wrap the whole car with titanium brushed metallic.

Avery-Proveer Ottawa Workshop

Last week I taught a hands-on carwrap workshop in Ottawa for Avery and Proveer.  The sold out workshop had 17 attendees who worked on 4 vehicles over two days.  The location the workshop was held at was Proline Graphix.  The material they worked with was Avery’s 1005 Easy Apply RS with 1360 DOL and the Supreme Wrapping Film.  This workshop was the third workshop that Proveer organized in Canada this year and it looks like they will do the same for 2013.  The cities will most likely be Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.  If you are interested in taking this workshop be sure to contact Proveer to get the dates for 2013.  Thanks as always to everyone at Proveer and Avery for making this such a smooth event and for Serge at Proline for being the hostest with the mostest.

Starting My Last Big Round of 2012

I’m currently over the Atlantic on my way to begin my last workshop/sign show tour for 2012 in North America.  This round is a long but good one.  In order, I have:

– Private workshop in Nashville for 12-Point Signs

– Avery/Proveer workshop in Ottawa

– Private workshop in Sherman, TX for Texoma Wraps

– Avery/Mutoh School of Wrap at Sign Warehouse in Denison, TX

– Avery/Mutoh School of Wrap at Denco in Kent, WA

– Avery booth at SEMA in Vegas

Talk about frequent flier miles.  It will be very hard to be away from my ladies back in Amsterdam for three weeks but its nice to know that I will be home for November and most of December before the three of us head to Idaho for X-mas.

All That Glitters

Back in July I received several rolls of Avery’s new Supreme brushed metallic films to test.  Due to time restraints, I only had a chance to wrap key elements on my car to test its conformability and such.  Well, this week I finally found an opening to fully wrap my car with the Avery Supreme brushed metallic film and, my goodness, the film was just a joy to put on.  Extremely easy to apply, very low tac, highly conformable and didn’t become shiny when I stretched it on extreme sections like mirrors and bumpers (some brands of brushed metallic films will irreversibly change hue when stretched too much, kind of like with matte films).  The pics don’t due it justice as it really pops when the sun is shining.  However, since I’m in Amsterdam, I would have to wait until May for some sun so these are the best I could come up with.  For what its worth, because I’ve wrapped my car a few times now, I wanted to see how fast I could wrap it up.  4.5 hours from cleaning/removal to my final post heat.  Amazing what a great film allows you to do if you put your head down (and shut off the cell phone).   The new Avery Supreme brushed metallic films will be available this month.

Dikke Lepel (The Fat Spoon)

Last Friday I wrapped this bakfiets (box bike) for a friend of ours in Amsterdam whom we met via our daughter’s school.  She runs a catering service called Dikke Lepel (The Fat Spoon) and wanted the box on her bike wrapped.  I called in a favor with Knibbe in Amsterdam to do the printing and used some Avery 1005 Easy Apply RS/1460 DOL and within minutes the bike was transformed.  New black bike bags and top are on the way which will make for a snazzy bakfiets.  Word has it that a carrot cake is being made as a thank you.   Oh, how sweet wrap favors can be.

Ireland Wrapped for 2012

I just got back from Ireland after teaching two rounds of workshops in Dublin and Belfast for Sign and Digital.  Each workshop had 12 participants and we worked with 3M IJ180 and 1080 films.  Most of the participants were new to carwrapping so I spent a majority of the time focusing on fundamentals and sound techniques.  On top of teaching the workshops, I wrapped Sign and Digital’s service van, with help from Mr. All-Around Marcus Keogh, before catching my afternoon flight on Thursday.  I think the design is great and will be a slick way for Sign and Digital to show up at service calls.  We are working on the schedule for 2013 which I hope will come out shortly.  I believe it will involve several of the general workshops along with one or two advanced workshops.  Thanks as always to everyone at Sign and Digital for all their help making this a great event.

Viper in Action

About a month ago I wrapped a Viper boat in Cologne, Germany for Josef Bolz.  Josh Sirlin of Sirlin Enterprises in Seattle designed and printed the wrap.  For this wrap I used 3M IJ180CV3.  I always love to wrap boats as they offer a different challenge then cars.  I especially love to see the boat in action.  Super cool.  Viva the Cologne Viper!

Happy 75th!

I wrapped my mom’s Suburu for her 75th birthday.  I had wrapped it 3 years ago in a darker wood grain and I thought it would be a good idea to rewrap it with a lighter shade of wood.  A special thanks to Paul Roba at Avery and Ken Parsley and Randy Anderson at Mutoh for making this happen.  I used Avery 1005 Easy Apply RS with 1460DOL and it was printed on a Mutoh Valuejet.  A special, special thanks to my mom for not only being a super mom but for saying, “You know, I think it looks great without the bumpers.  Do you mind not doing them?”  And I thought it was my birthday present for her.

Sneak Peak for SEMA

Here is the car that I will be wrapping in the Avery booth at SEMA.  I can wait to really spice up this car with Avery’s new brushed metallic films that are coming out in October.  The brushed metallic films are simply amazing and, actually, when I get back to Amsterdam on September 24 I plan on wrapping my car with it.  I’ll definitely blog the finished product.  See you at SEMA!

Calgary Wrapede

I taught a 3-day workshop in Calgary this week for Proveer/Avery-Dennison.  The 3-day workshop/certification test had 20 attendees who went wild wrapping 3 cars using 1005 Easy Apply RS and Supreme Wrapping Film.  This workshop was the 2nd of 3 Proveer sponsored workshops this year.  The next one coming up will be in Ottawa from October 17-19.  Its sold out but the new 2013 schedule should be available shortly.   A special thanks to all the folks at Proveer and Linda Ebbinghaus from Avery for making this happen and a special special thanks to all of the wrappers who took the time and money to attend.

Hot Pink

The latest round of the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshops has just been completed.  The sold out workshops were filled with really eager to learn students who had varying levels of previous experience.  Everyone worked with the Avery 1005 Easy Apply RS and Supreme Wrapping Film.  A Mutoh Valuejet was used on all the full print graphics.   The color of the cargo van print changes from workshop to workshop and this time it was hot pink.  The final result looked great and it made my daughter happy as its her favorite color.

Black Matte Coupon

While I was teaching the Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap in Wharton, NJ earlier this week I stayed with a very good friend from high school who lives in the area with his family.  As a thank you for the hospitality I pimped out his family’s Honda Fit with some Avery Supreme matte black – wrapping the hood, side mirrors, door handles and spoiler.  They use this car for their volunteer work at an organization they created – Coupons for the Community (www.couponsforthecommunity.org).  Its been a huge success and the number of people that they help is astounding, especially for how little money (due to the coupons) and the amount of hard work.  I love it that they can now help low income families out in style.  That’s the way it should be.

Sold Out!

I am happy to announce that the remaining Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap workshops for 2012 have sold out.  This means that all 10 School of Wrap workshops sold out this year.  Very exciting stuff.  The new schedule for 2013 is being worked out so I hope it will be available shortly.  For those of you who wanted to take the School of Wrap workshop this year you do have one option and that is setting up a private workshop with me.  Several companies have already booked me for the fall so if you’re interested feel free to shoot me an e-mail – justin@justinpate.net.

SEMA 2012

I am very happy to announce that I will be doing demos again this year for Avery Dennison at their SEMA booth.  This year, I will be using their Supreme Wrapping Film along with new films – brushed metallic, matte metallic and carbon fiber.  Very exciting stuff.  SEMA will be in the Las Vegas Convention Center and runs from Oct.30 thru Nov. 2.  This is easily my favorite car show which makes my demos even more exciting to do.  Be sure to come by the booth!

Apple Barcelona

I was very happy to have been part of the 2D install for the new Apple flagship store in Barcelona.  On July 14 starting at 5pm, an ace crew applied white vinyl to the inside windows of both floors.  I was very pleased with how the install went as it was a massive amount of vinyl and one section was particularly tricky to reach as it involved two floors.  Unfortunately, I had to fly out the next day for another job so I wasn’t able to help out with the spectacular 3D install that took place on July 15.  A truly beautiful install that the pics I have so far don’t do it justice.  The inside of the store is stunning as always but those pics will have to wait until the store officially opens in 8 days.  Thanks as always to everyone at The Guild and Apple for making this a super smooth install.

That’s Grand

I just got back home from a 3-day wrapathon.  Leo Maher, owner of Sign and Digital, had me come in to teach two workshops and wrap up his new “Creative Cruiser”.  On Tuesday I taught a basic/intermediate workshop for 15 people.   On Wednesday I taught an Advanced workshop for 10 installers.  This workshop focused on the higher end aspects of vehicle wraps like mirrors, bumpers, door handles and creating higher efficiency.  For both workshops we used 3M IJ180 and 1080 car wrap film.  Thursday was a straight wrap day with myself and Marcus from Sign and Digital, transforming their new shop on wheels.  This van will travel around Ireland and England selling tools and media.  Bringing a shop to the sign shops.  Brilliant.  The next round of workshops in Ireland will be in early October.  For more info and to sign up go to:  www.signanddigital.com.

Dublin

I am at the hotel in Dublin getting ready to teach two workshops for Sign and Digital.  Today’s workshop will be a basic/intermediate and tomorrow will be an advanced workshop for selected installers.  The film used during the workshops will be 3M IJ180 and the 1080 paintwrap film.  After the workshops I will help wrap Sign and Digital’s new showroom van.  This is a custom van that is a rolling store so they can bring their products directly to the customers.  Brilliant or, as the Irish say, grand.  By Thursday night I’ll have lots of pics along with a new post.  Cheers.

LA Wrapped Up

The Avery Mutoh School of Wrap workshop in LA is all wrapped up.  17 students took the sold out 2-day workshop.  Eddie Cardenas from Croftgate was on hand to demonstrate their products which are great for cleaning and protecting wraps.  As usual, we used Avery’s 1005 Easy Apply RS and Supreme Wrapping film.  All of the full color practice film was printed on a Mutoh Valuejet.   Next round, New Jersey and Chicago in September.

Oh Canada

The two wrap classes in Canada are completed – a workshop for Proveer in Burnaby and an Avery-Mutoh School of Wrap in Toronto.  The students were just great, super eager to learn and tackle all the nuances of carwrapping.  For both classes, the film used was Avery’s 1005 Easy Apply RS and the Supreme Wrapping film.  The workshop in Burnaby was held at a hotel which was extra nice because it meant I could take the elevator to the class as opposed to drive.  Always a plus.  Thanks to everyone at Proveer, Avery and Mutoh for making all this happen.  I am currently finishing up the LA workshop which I’ll blog about shortly.

The upcoming round of the School of Wrap workshops will be in September – New Jersey and Chicago.  New Jersey is sold out but there are 2 spots remaining for Chicago.  To sign up go to: http://www.na.averygraphics.com/AvGrNA_avery_wrap_school.asp

Last week I taught my first of 6 workshops for Sign and Digital in Dublin.  Sign and Digital is a great distributor in Ireland who really goes out of there way to provide the best tools/materials as well as educating their customers on how to use them.  The class had 15 students who worked with 3M IJ180 print film as well as 1080 paintwrap film.  The next workshop in Belfast on June 1 is sold out but new classes have been added to meet the demand, including 2 Advanced courses.  To sign up for the workshop go to: http://www.signanddigital.com/.  A special thanks to Leo Maher and everyone at Sign and Digital for making this first one go super smooth.

Party Rock

I was hired to wrap this bus by Dutch-Dutch, an installation company here in the Netherlands.  A proud install, needless to say.  Party Rock!

Basic Workshop at Squeezy

Today I taught a basic workshop at Squeezy in the Netherlands which is sponsored by 3M.  There were 10 students who attended.  Ruben van Raam talked about the films and manufacturing process for the first 2 hours then Herman and I took over to demonstrate the basics.  An all-around good day with very eager students.  Squeezy is now doing trainings at 3M Belgium and at their new location in Breda.  I am happy to say I will be teaching a few of them so if you happen to be in Belgium or the Netherlands check the schedule.

ISA 2012 Done and Done

I got back from the ISA show on Sunday after doing 4 demos a day for Avery Dennison in their booth.  The attendance of the show was really good and the enthusiasm of people watching the demos was great.  I wrapped two cars for Avery Dennison – one with a plaid print using their 1005 Easy Apply RS and the other car with different colors and finishes of the Avery Supreme Wrapping Film.  Also, for both vehicles I added chrome highlights with Avery’s new Conform Chrome.  This Conform Chrome I added to the door handles, side molding and made accents on the hood.  Cool stuff. A lot of people asked about the Avery Mutoh School of Wrap workshops.  They are all almost sold out so if you’re interested be sure to sign up.  They definitely have a buzz like I’ve never seen.

New Chrome Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64II4YL0riw

This video was made while I was doing demos last week at the ISA show in Orlando.  I am applying Avery’s new Conform Chrome which will be available in mid-April 2012 for purchase.  Conform Chrome is for accent pieces on vehicles like door handles, mirrors and striping.  I’m applying a large piece to a fender to demonstrate how flexible and easy to work with Conform Chrome is.  Please note that applying large sections of chrome onto a vehicle is illegal in most states so be sure to check with local regulations.

Private Workshop in Nashville

I was able to fly to Nashville between School of Wrap Workshops and ISA to give a private workshop to 12-Point Signworks and Sunrise Signs.  I love privates as it gives me a chance to really focus on the minute details that can turn a good install company into a great one.  All the guys in the workshop were really eager to learn new tips and tricks.  12-Point Signworks had just got done wrapping an Aston Martin and it was just beautiful.  They do great work in the Nashville area and are now Avery certified.  All the better.  A special thanks to Murray Johns, owner of 12-Point Signworks, for the hospitality and Adam Sokoloff, owner of Sunrise Signs for some good BBQ.  The poster of Dolly was at the BBQ joint.
